How to Make a Pac-Man Ghost in Blender (Beginner Tutorial)
In this post, I’ll show you how to create a classic Pac-Man ghost in Blender using a 2D reference image. This is a great simple project for beginners who want to practice basic modeling, extrusion, and shaping techniques.
What You’ll Need
- Blender (any recent version)
- A 2D reference image of a Pac-Man ghost (you can find free ones online or screenshot one)
Step-by-Step Process1. Set Up Your Reference Image
Open Blender and delete the default cube.
Go to the front orthographic view (press Numpad 1).
Add your reference image as a background:
Open Blender and delete the default cube.
Go to the front orthographic view (press Numpad 1).
Add your reference image as a background:
- Press Shift + A → Image → Reference
- Select your Pac-Man ghost image
- Scale and position it so it’s easy to model over.
- Add a Circle (Shift + A → Mesh → Circle).
- Set the number of vertices to 16 or 32 for a smoother look.
- Scale it to match the main body of the ghost in your reference.
- Tab into Edit Mode and extrude the circle downward (E then Z) to give it some height.
- Shape the bottom into the classic wavy “ghost skirt” by selecting the bottom vertices and moving them up and down in a wave pattern.
- Add two UV Spheres for the eyes.
- Scale them down and position them on the front of the ghost.
- You can also add smaller black spheres inside for the pupils.
- Parent the eyes to the main body so they move together.
- Select the main body and apply a Subdivision Surface modifier for a smoother look.
- Add a solid color material (classic colors are red, pink, cyan, or orange).
- Optional: Add a slight emission or glow if you want a more stylized look.
- Check the topology and make sure there are no unnecessary vertices.
- You can add a simple armature later if you want to animate the ghost floating or waving.
